CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

ONLY SLIGHTLY EXPLOITATIVE

It was just weird, okay? Here’s this kid, and for his level, he’s basically a world-breaker. No real weak spots. No real disadvantages to his class. Very little he can’t do, and he can do almost anything all the time. He doesn’t even strategize, unless you count his fondness for making really big bombs. That and his ability to screw stuff up in different ways just always seems to kick in at the right moment.

Meanwhile, stuff is happening around him like he’s a magnet for it. He keeps getting attacked, finding missions to go on, and drawing in talent. He doesn’t even know how much talent. I’m not what my dad was, but I’m easily a top percent pilot. Aggi is a kind of distilled death built to make other people regret their life choices. I’m not sure what Jeff even was, is, and will be, but he wasn’t normal. On some planets, they call him various things that all translate to “The Herald of Explosions” and I’m not sure if they might understand something that I don’t. And I’m the one who’s next to him.

Anyway, the kid just looks at me all the time and asks me to do stupid stuff.

Was I aware I shouldn’t do it? Absolutely. Did I not know that it was a bad choice on paper? I knew. I said no in my head twenty times. And then when I look at Sean to say my rejection out loud, I saw his eyes. They were I’m-gonna-go-fuck-some-stuff-up eyes. He was so acclimated to anything being possible if he blew enough shit up, he didn’t doubt that he could pull off whatever harebrained idea he just had.

I decided I wanted to see that happen. Plus, Aggi told me she’d stab me if I didn’t.

— A letter from Itto to his mother in apology for a missed birthday

Itto grimaced. He knew where Sean was going with things, the whole room did. And it would have entirely been within Itto and Aggi’s rights to cut off the conversation right then and there. What Sean was thinking would put them in incredible danger, not to mention the extra responsibility that they’d take on.

Doesn’t matter. I have to give this a try, Sean thought.

“Is this hut soundproof?” Sean asked.

“Soundproof enough. It’s made of bits and pieces of hull that was supposed to keep the cold of space out of a ship. Not much is getting through that, and nobody here is going to try to listen in, anyway.” Jason motioned towards a mat where the four of them sat. “So you’re going to have to catch me up on what’s going on. As much as you can.”

“Okay, so.” Sean had decided Jason was worth risking some informational security on as soon as he had seen the village. Some people were tricky, but he found it hard to imagine that Jason would have put together a full settlement of miserable, displaced humans as a cover. “To keep it short, I have an Earth-seed, more or less.
